Anything Goes at The Folly, Worden Park, Leyland for South Lancashire Cake Club

Our latest cake club outing was to The Folly Coffee House situated in the heart of Leyland's beloved Worden Park,  housed in the old stable block this quirky coffee shop welcomed us with open arms.

Our theme for our event was "Anything Goes" so we had a fabulous selection of cakes and bakes some of which wouldn't normally be allowed at a Clandestine Cake Club.

We enjoyed chatting about baking, the history of the park and the weather. So if you are visiting the park pop in for a warming coffee or a bite to eat at The Folly.

The interior is quirky and reflects the history of the venue.

Outside is the Arts Centre (sadly unused now due to budget cuts) and the remains of Worden Hall, ancestral home of the Faringtons.

 As stated previously as our theme was Anything Goes, traybakes were allowed , so we had some lovely Gluten Free, date sweetened brownie bites and some delicious Carmelita's.

Scrummy Cherry Madeira cake, traditional Dutch celebration cake , Coffee cake and Tunisian Orange Cake.

Lancashire Platter @ Dunkirk Hall

As you all know we love our local food here at Lancashire Food and had noticed that a local pub was tweeting about their local special "The Lancashire Platter",  so we had to go and give it a try didn't we.

Dunkirk Hall is very old pub on the outskirts of Leyland which over the last few years has had mixed fortunes, the foodie landlady Donna loves local food and has worked really hard to provide an appealing menu which features some local food, in fact so great is her love of all things local that she has opened a mini tea shop cum deli at the back of the pub, more of that later.

Back to the Lancashire Platter - an attractive alternative to the traditional ploughmans, featured in the platter is Creamy Lancashire Cheese from Dewlay cheese, a fab slice of pie from the Great North Pie company, home made scotch egg, bread from a local bakery, Fiddlers Lancashire Crisps, salad, homemade coleslaw and date and pear chutney from Hawkshead Relish.

All in all a fab platter, it disappeared very quickly. The pie I have to say was the star, but the other goodies were also very tasty.

Little D's at the back of the pub fortunately sells most of the goodies featured in the platter plus Stockleys Old Fashioned Sweeties, Mr Fitzpatricks Cordials, Bury Black Puddings, Agnes Rose Vinegars and Oils and also Ice Creams too. Little D's also has a few outside tables if the pub atmosphere isn't for you where you can take afternoon tea.

Coppers Tea Room Leyland

A group of ladies that lunch, i.e myself and number of colleagues from work visited this newly opened tea room in Leyland on a busy Friday lunchtime. We were all intrigued to visit the old Police station and view the cells. Coppers is a family concern and the focus is on a traditional tea room experience. The old Police station has been refurbished in a traditional Victorian style complete with chandeliers, traditional farmhouse kitchen paraphernalia abounds and lots of eclectic china welcomes you in. The other room is more lounge style with comfy chairs and low tables.

The menu is very much focused on a traditional experience, sandwiches, soup, jacket potates and lots of cake. You can even order a full afternoon tea served on a cake stand. Taylors teas and coffee are the order of the day and old school soft drinks such as Iron Brew, saspirilla and dandelion and burdock are available.

The menu is reasonably priced and only one of the party had a slight criticism, the soup despite being very tasty was a little cool, otherwise we were all very satisfied. A couple of us even had room for cake which was very nice. You also get a proper pot of tea, a china cup and a jug of real milk.

Call in soon, it was very busy on the day we visited we didn't see the ghost but the cells were very interesting.
